The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S were released a few days ago. The new Microsoft consoles were well received, but as can be seen on various forums and groups, many people are having trouble connecting them to their WiFi. As I mentioned in my first impressions of the Xbox Series X, I was one of the unfortunates, but after a few hours of searching for answers, I was able to solve this extremely interesting problem. So, what should you do if your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S fails to connect to WiFi? I’ve already started translating.
The Xbox Series X/S will not connect to WiFi – What should I do in this situation?
If your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S won’t connect to WiFi, don’t worry; your console isn’t broken, and your internet connection is (most likely) fine. After a few hours of experimenting with various router settings, I discovered that Microsoft’s new consoles have a problem with 5 GHz WiFi. Simply put, if you are using this frequency, your Xbox Series X or Series S will not connect to WiFi. Switching to the 2.4 GHz band is the solution to this problem. This can be done in your router’s settings. It looks like this in my (TP-Link Archer C2):
WiFi Xbox Series X
Just uncheck 5 GHz and save the changes. What is the distinction between 2.4 and 5 GHz? The main difference is the maximum download speed, which for the former is up to 600 MB / s and for the latter is up to 1,300 MB / s. However, it is worth noting that the 2.4 GHz band is much more crowded than the 5 GHz band, which means that speed drops can be extremely frequent. So it’s not a perfect solution, but if your Xbox Series X or Series S won’t connect to WiFi, there aren’t many other options. We can rely on Microsoft to issue an appropriate update to alleviate this annoyance.
An Ethernet network cable can be used to connect the console to the internet instead of WiFi. For this purpose, it is enough to buy the appropriate cable, connect the first end to the Xbox Series X or Series S, and the second to the router. However, keep in mind that Ethernet cables have speed limits – those for PLN 10-20 will typically send a maximum of 100 Mb / s. More expensive ones can handle faster internet, so it’s important to choose the right cable for your package.
Summary: Xbox Series X / S does not connect to WiFi.
I hope you found this tutorial helpful, and that you now know what to do if your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S isn’t connecting to WiFi. None of the solutions mentioned are perfect, but I can’t think of anything better right now. Some people claim that only WPA encryption in the router’s settings helps, but it comes with a slew of risks and isn’t worth the risk. The danger is simply too great.
It goes without saying that something like this should not be present in any modern console, but hey, mistakes happen. Perhaps Microsoft will notice the issue and address it soon. Meanwhile, let me know in the comments if you were having trouble with the title!
