Every year, Apple improves the cameras in its smartphones. The photo quality is excellent, and this is most likely the main area for improvement each year. Tim Cook overlooks one feature, or it is only important to a small number of users – it is superzoom. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 2.5x zoom, which is clearly inferior to the results found in Samsung smartphones. I didn’t get this solution last year, and I doubt I’ll see it this year. With the release of the iPhone 13 in 2021, camera lenses will not receive significant hardware updates. Ming-Chi Kuo provided us with this information in a note that MacRumors obtained.
Replacing smartphones every year makes less and less sense – will the iPhone 13 disappoint?
The focus of today’s note is a price war between lens suppliers Largan and Genius Electronic Optical. Vendor profitability will be impacted by the latter, with the latter being especially vulnerable due to its reliance on Apple. According to information, the Cupertino behemoth has not ordered any new sets thus far, implying a lack of or limited photographic news in another family of phones.
Despite Kuo’s predictions, this does not rule out any future improvements to the camera’s overall performance. Apple is also putting a lot of effort into the software, so we may see some new features in the future. Some results, however, cannot be achieved with software, and the company occasionally tweaks what is nearly perfect. Apple will almost certainly rely on the iPhone 12’s newly updated seven-element lens assembly this year.
In a note to investors on Friday, Kuo stated that Apple has no plans to significantly improve iPhone lens systems in 2021. Every year, the changes in flagships become smaller, though we must note that these devices have received an extremely high level of refinement. Until recently, we could complain about insufficient batteries or poor low-light photography capabilities even in high-end devices. We can ignore it for the time being, as top smartphones meet all of the requirements. They did, however, become a little monotonous.
We will have to wait a long time for changes to the iPhone camera, but the results will be spectacular.
The 7P lens array, which debuted with the iPhone 12 last year, has a f / 1.6 aperture as opposed to the previous f / 1.8 6P chip. Kuo was unable to provide specifics about Apple’s future plans, but previous reports claimed that the 7P chip with a telephoto module would also be found in the iPhone 13 Pro.
In addition to the new lens, the analyst predicts that the iPhone 14 family will include periscope zoom in 2022. Cupertino’s company may be able to use entirely new technology. Prisms and mirrors are typically used in the unique design to redirect incoming light and achieve a longer focal length than traditional camera modules. In the case of smartphones, the technology can be designed to direct light from the front lens through the prism to the imaging point or sensor located deep within the device’s housing. Apple owns a slew of patents for folding lens designs, some of which date back to at least 2016. I’m hoping to see the results of this work.
